Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home?

Heat Pumps...

🌱 Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home?

With energy prices rising and a national push toward greener living, more UK homeowners are exploring alternative heating solutions — and heat pumps are fast becoming a top contender. But is a heat pump the right fit for your home?

At PalmerWebb, we’re passionate about helping you make informed choices when it comes to heating and plumbing. Here's what you need to know.

âś… What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an energy-efficient heating system that transfers heat from the outside air (or ground) into your home. Think of it like a fridge in reverse — instead of removing heat to keep things cold, it pulls in warmth to keep you cosy.

There are two main types:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) – extract heat from the air
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) – extract heat from the ground via buried pipes

đź’¸ Are Heat Pumps Cheaper to Run?

They can be. While installation costs are higher than traditional boilers, heat pumps are incredibly efficient — for every 1kW of electricity used, they can produce 3–4kW of heat. This means lower energy bills over time, especially if you’re replacing electric or oil heating.

🌍 The Environmental Benefit

Heat pumps don’t burn fossil fuels, making them a cleaner alternative to gas boilers. If you combine them with renewable electricity (like solar panels), you can dramatically reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

🏠 Is Your Home Suitable?

Not every home is heat pump-ready — but many can be adapted. Here’s what we look at:

  • Insulation: Well-insulated homes benefit most. Older or draughty homes may need upgrades first.
  • Radiator Size: Heat pumps work best with larger surface area radiators or underfloor heating.
  • Outdoor Space: Air source units need room outside for airflow. Ground source units require space for digging trenches or boreholes.

đź’· Are Grants Available?

Yes — the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) in England and Wales offers up to £7,500 towards the cost of an air or ground source heat pump. We’ll help you understand what you’re eligible for and manage the application process on your behalf.
